To significantly increase the number of disadvantaged children who acquire the knowledge and skills to prepare them for entry into primary school and lifelong learning by accessing quality early childhood development services.
Today, across the region, there are excellent education reform programmes at tertiary, secondary and primary levels…but none at pre-school level . Most Caribbean governments begin formal investment in children’s education at primary school level, after critical shaping of the individual, and it has been found that only one third of Caribbean parents tell stories, play games or sing songs to their children. Sadly, physical punishment begins early in the lives of many. Typically, almost half of all rural families do not have information on how to stimulate children and nine out of ten 0-to-3 year olds have no chance to attend a day care centre or any other early childhood development programme. As a result, 25-30% of Caribbean children have not acquired the necessary basic cognitive skills to benefit from primary school education when they begin.
Young Caribbean children from all social and economic backgrounds have equal opportunities to reach their maximum potential.
To strengthen the care environment for young children in the Caribbean by providing technical and financial support to partners.
